I know many of us want to buy Bibles or devotional books for the kiddos in our lives so if you’re wondering where to start, or what kind of Bible or devotional would be best for your child, check out my recommendations below.

Pastor Emily

Bibles

Helpful Hint: When buying a picture Bible for young kids, make sure it has the story of Adam and Eve/The Fall (Genesis 3). I’ve noticed several picture Bibles jump from the creation story to Noah’s Ark, leaving out Adam and Eve’s sin in the Garden of Eden. As a kids’ pastor, I really feel like this story is important for your kids to know and learn from a young age. Sin entering the world is the whole reason we needed Jesus to come in the first place – it’s essential to know to understand God’s Big Story.

The Beginner’s Bible

This picture Bible is great for ages 6 and under. It includes more than 90 Bible stories that are easy to understand and great for younger kids. We use it in our preschool classes and in daycare chapel. Kids respond really well to it!

The Jesus Storybook Bible

I love the Jesus Storybook Bible! Every story in this Bible points to Jesus, helping kids discover that Jesus is at the center of God’s Big Story. This picture Bible is perfect for ages 4 and up.

The Adventure Bible

Looking to transition your child from a picture Bible to one with chapters and verses? Check out the Adventure Bible! This Bible is made specifically for kids and comes in the New International Version (NIV) or the New International Readers Version (NIrV). We recommend the NIrV because it is easy for kids to read and understand.

The Action Bible

Ok, this one’s pretty cool! The Action Bible includes over 200 stories in the Bible and is written and illustrated like a comic book! This Bible engages kids as it invites them into God’s action story. Hint: This is a big hit with preteen boys!

Jesus Calling for Kids by Sarah Young

I’m a big fan of the Jesus Calling devotionals! Jesus Calling for Kids is filled with devotions written as if Jesus is speaking directly to your child’s heart. This is a wonderful devotional book that also corresponds to the Jesus Calling devotional for adults – making it a great resource and devotional you could do together as a family! Already have Jesus Calling for Kids? Check out Jesus Always for Kids and Jesus Today for Kids as well!

You Are Special by Max Lucado

This is one of my favorite books! Written by Max Lucado, this children’s book helps kids understand they’re special – not because of their brains, looks, or talents – but just because. This book will help your child discover they are precious in God’s sight!
